One of the first things that people will say when they think about getting into any professional field is that they’re thinking about going back to school to take classes in the profession that they want to get into. It’s an understandable concept: web design is complicated and difficult and many think it’s best to receive formal guidance and training.
Do You Need to Go to School to Learn Web Design?
No, you don’t need to go to school. Unless you apply for a job where the potential employer is asking that you specifically have a college degree with some credential saying that you studied web design, or other information technology field, you absolutely don’t need school.
If you’re a freelancer, you certainly don’t need to go to school. I have never, NOT EVER had a potential client ask me for my college degree or some kind of certification.
Your past work or portfolio will be your credentials. Show your prospective clients that you can do the work. The more work you can show them, the better. Even if you’re looking for a full-time job working at an company doing web design, in most cases, you’ll get the job if you can show excellent work.
Do You Need a Certification to Sell Web Design?
No, there’s no legal requirement to be certified in web design even if you intend to sell your services to people. You will probably need a business license to operate a business in your city or county, but you in most cases, you don’t need to display any certification. Some areas are different, however. For example, Savannah Georgia requires that you be certified if you’re going to operate a tour guide business. Check with your city or county if they certification for web design; it should be listed on the website.
What if I need Certification?
There are places where you can go to take a test to receive a certificate in web design. One place I’d recommend is w3schools.com. They have exams to receive your certification for $95 per exam. You can even take the exam a second time if you fail the first time or would like to get a better score.
